It’s the opposite of “divide to conquer, keep divided to keep conquered” and it has a unique possibility called SYNERGY, sometimes known as emergent behavior where the sum of the whole is unpredicted by the individual parts.
There are other fascinating benefits of working together … one often called ‘the group effect’ where individuals performances improve when working or training with a group.
I’ve experienced this a number of times in sport, particularly in running teams where four or more team members run in rhythm and it’s an absolutely amazing feeling. I’ve also experienced it in business where the growth generated by an aligned team can be so explosive that it is difficult to manage without proper financial planning.
It’s just one of the reasons I love Buckminster Fuller or ‘Bucky’ as he was known, in particular for the clarity he brings to almost every topic … and synergy of course was one of his favorite topics. See nothing in nature operates on it’s own! Yet as human beings we are very often working separately … and even just walking down the street don’t you sometimes feel a separation?
Studying Buckminster Fuller and his work and reading biographies has had a profound shift in the way I view my life.
He said (c1975) that it no longer works to prosper personally at the exclusion of everyone else, or more accurately “It is no longer integrity to look after yourself at the expense of another.”
To do so means that you are not present to the opportunity or possibility that everyone can be abundantly SUCCESSFUL within a very short time.
Our current financial structure is still based on the Malthusian belief that there is not enough for everyone, and so it is accepted as OK to take what I can … even if it takes from someone else, or at the expense of another!
This is old thinking, this is dinosaur thinking …
